JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – It’s women’s month in South Africa and lately I have been asking myself, what’s the point?
The campaigns that are run are things like, ‘Which women have made a difference in your life‘, ‘What do you appreciate about women‘, ‘What do you appreciate about yourself as a woman‘ – SAfm even has a woman’s day show that has an all male panel which is ‘My Enough is Our Enough‘.
With South Africa having one of the highest femicede rates in the world and cops notoriously feeling women deserve to be beaten by the partners (see Trevor Noah’s mom’s story in ‘Born a Crime‘) I can’t help but feel – what’s the point?
The brave women of 9 August 1956 and their ideals have been over run by money chasers and those seeking to stay relevant.
The events set up by government is another way of enriching another comrade while the participants go back and hide cadre misdeeds against women. If they can cover up for each other through the ‘bro code’ you do ask yourself – Women’s month… another marketing gimmick?
